Ripon RUFC Coaches Code of Conduct

This code will be adhered to at all times and must be read and understood by all those it relates to.

The Code

  • Rugby is only part of the player’s lives. Recognise this and allow for it in your demands on them.
  • Rugby is for everyone. Do not rely on "star" players and never make a player feel like a "spare part".
  • Never ridicule or belittle any players and always make them feel valued.
  • Do some research into the child development, find out about the physical, intellectual and emotional capabilities of the age group you work with.
  • Rugby is a potentially dangerous game which relies on every participant playing it in a spirit of mutual respect. Teach the players the meaning of "fair play" and set them a good example.
  • Read and understand the RFU Continuum. Abide by the Laws of the Game.
  • Learn the Laws and learn how to referee.
  • Teach players by your own example to always respect the referee.
  • Your owe it to yourself to always behave as a coach:
    • Always look and act like a coach
    • Start and finish on time
    • Play your season and session
    • Do not drink alcohol prior to or during coaching
    • Do not smoke during coaching
  • To be a good coach you need regular information on coaching issues, rugby skills and techniques.
  • You are responsible for the safety of the players you work with:
    • Mark out a safe working area and keep it safe. Make sure equipment is in good repair.
    • Never “join in” with contact drills and games. You are too strong and may hurt the players.
    • Do not encourage or allow players to play with and injury.
    • Never wear watches, rings or other jewellery that could catch or hurt a child.
  • Do not put yourself in a position where you could be suspected or accused of physical or sexual abuse of any child associated with the Club. Use a separate changing room from players. Never be alone with a player behind closed doors and never get in the bath or shower with the players.
  • Tell the players and keep telling yourself that winning and losing are only by-products of performance. We are there to play and enjoy playing – nothing more.
  • At Ripon RUFC all inter-club games are to be player by all members of your squad not just “the elite”. Every child who turns up to training deserves game time.
  • Treat games against other clubs as lessons and opportunities to learn and not as tests.
  • Gain respect by being generous with your praise when it is deserved and set a good example in every way.
