About Ripon RUFC Junior Rugby

Ripon RUFC boasts a thriving junior section which is now one of the biggest in North Yorkshire. The club’s junior section was awarded the prestigious RFU Seal of Approval in 2006 in recognition of the safe and well-structured delivery of coaching and care given to its youngsters. This also made Ripon RUFC the first club in the city achieve the Sport England Clubmark.

All age groups are lead by RFU qualified coaches. We also comply with RFU guidelines on child protection and our coaches are appropriately police checked to ensure suitability to work with children.

The age groups are determined by your child’s age at midnight 31st August/1st September and are aligned to their school year. A year 5 child will play under 10 rugby, year 6 under 11 etc.

The cost is £40 for the season for each junior player with the season running from the 1st Sunday in September until the last Sunday in April.

An overview of how the game is structured (RFU Continuum) is given below:

Mini rugby

Played from under 7 to under 10
Non-contact seven-a-side tag rugby at under 8 and under 9
Contact elements are gradually introduced through the nine-a-side game at under 9 and under 10
Emphasis on ball-handling, running and evasion with no kicking of the ball

Midi rugby

Played at under 10, under 11 and under 12
Twelve-a-side game with 5 forwards and 7 backs
Emphasis on developing teamwork and unit play
Gradual introduction of kicking into game

Youth Rugby

Under 13 to under 16
Full 15-a-side game
